What happens next?
Once received, the Human Resources Department will review your application for completeness and will request an interview with you. That will then be followed by a criminal background check. Once the background investigation is completed, your application will be voted on for Probationary Membership at a regular monthly meeting, held at 8:00pm the third Friday of each month at the Abingdon Road Station. You are encouraged to attend the meeting, if possible.

If accepted into Probationary Membership, you will be asked to get an entry level physical exam (which meets NFPA 1582 guidelines) and attend New Member Orientation. You will receive mandatory training such as CPR, Infectious Disease Prevention, Haz-Mat Awareness, HIPAA, and Abingdon Fire Company Operations as well as be fit tested for wearing a SCBA mask. As you progress through your probationary period you will also receive (as necessary and subject to availability) your member identification card, personal accountability tags, Class A/B uniforms, station keys, a Fire/EMS pager, and access to the members section of the Abingdon Fire Company website.

During the probationary period members that will be fire suppression responders will be issued personal protective equipment (PPE), learn the process of being allowed to ride a piece of fire apparatus (Ride-Along Program, Apprentice Level, Blackstripe Level, Cleared Firefighter), learn the location and function of fire suppression equipment, pass the Fire Captain’s Equipment Review, and be assisted in getting into a MFRI Firefighter I class.

During the probationary period members that will be EMS responders will be issued PPE, learn the process of being allowed to ride the Ambulance (Observer/4th, 3rd, Aid and/or Driver), learn how to complete the Daily Ambulance Checklist, which includes knowing the location and function of all of the equipment found on the Ambulance, pass the EMS Training Officer’s Review, and be assisted in getting into a MFRI EMT-Basic class.

Upon completion of the probationary period, you will be eligible for acceptance into regular membership by vote at a company meeting. The Human Resources Department will present to the membership the level of activity (calls, training, and other duties) you have made during the probationary period, MFRI training courses completed, and any other relevant information for the membership to consider when voting. If accepted into regular membership you will have all of the voting rights and privileges that come with full membership.
